Multimedia ( Video, sound, light, lightbox, photographs, and installation)
Reflectance of the water surface is a multimedia exploration that delves into the sustainability and equilibrium of human and non-human habitats along rivers and lakes in Khon Kaen’s dystopian setting. This body of work integrates photographs, lightboxes, videos, installations, sounds, lights, natural materials, and found objects to metaphorically depict the water surface amidst impending development.
In Wanderlust a fictional tale accompanied by a poem, a millipede traverses Khon Kaen across time and space, illuminating the city’s evolution and the creature’s journey of discovery and adaptation. Ultimately, the millipede returns to rest atop a stone, symbolizing contemplation amidst shifting realities.
Flows Away projects still and moving images of water, transforming reflections within the space into a dynamic, painting-like illusion. This portrayal captures water’s metamorphosis across different dimensions, blending macro and microcosmic universes. The installation employs light projected onto a transparent screen adorned with shattered mirror pieces, casting fragmented light shapes across the walls. In collaboration with ‘Flows Away,’ ‘Dystopia Phantasm’ visually imagines the melting landscape reflected on the water surface. The movement appears unpredictable yet gradually invites viewers to experience the sensory changes through time.
At the heart of the exhibition, Dystopia of Delta presents a miniature recreation of mountains sculpted from soil, clay, and earth sourced from Kaeng Nam Ton Lake. At its center lies an island symbolizing an inverted replica of the lake, a wetland confronting imminent development. Surrounding this sculpture are numerous mounds topped with recycled broken mirrors, simulating the water’s surface as it reflects light from overhead projectors, creating an aura-like phenomenon.
Intertwined Landscape a series of photographs, explores environments where water meets land, capturing the evolving presence of human development and underscoring the inseparable link between life and nature.
Concluding the exhibit, The Shade of Duckweeds introduces vibrant, multi-layered shapes of duckweed overlaying urban scenes from central to peripheral Khon Kaen, juxtaposed with tree branches resembling leaves. This piece features a lightbox crafted from digitally traced images and a photo series that portrays the intricate relationship between humanity and nature, blending various landscape styles from macro to microcosm through overlapping colors.
Reflectance of the water surface synthesizes my contemplation on sustainability and habitat balance, merging digital technology with reality and illusion, movement and stillness, and visual perception with bodily experience. It distills memories into a fluid meditation on the interplay between natural and human-made elements.
